Description of Fennel.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a stem vegetable belonging to the Apiaceae family. This herbaceous, annual or biennial plant produces a taproot from which the bulb, which is consumed, grows. The bulb consists of a white leaf sheath, oval or round in shape, with a firm and thick consistency. Above the bulb, small branches grow, from which very green, soft, and frilly leaves sprout.
Whether raw or cooked, fennel is one of the stars of international cuisine due to its aromatic flavor and its crunchy yet tender texture. Delicious even without seasoning, it gently enhances the overall taste of any dish when used as an ingredient in elaborate recipes.
Low in calories, fennel is packed with beneficial properties: it is digestive and protective for the entire gastrointestinal system, detoxifies the liver and blood, and is anti-inflammatory. It provides minerals, vitamins, and flavonoids.
Despite having relatively low thermal and light requirements, fennel plants need a lot of nitrogen. During the summer period, fennel batches are placed in a germination chamber for a few days and then spread in shaded greenhouses (at least until the growth phase is complete).
The perfect light balance, in terms of intensity or shading, and proper nutrient management are the secrets to producing a strong and balanced fennel plant.
In some specific cases and upon customer request, Vivai Bacchetto also uses the technique of cutting before delivery to facilitate transplanting the seedlings in the open field.
