Grafted Plants

Grafted
Plants

An entire production department dedicated to grafting.

One of the new market needs is related to grafted plants. Vivai Bacchetto has dedicated an entire production
department and highly specialized personnel to grafting, with the utmost respect for hygiene and quality standards. Special growth chambers with controlled environments are used for grafted seedlings of melon, pepper, watermelon, tomato, cucumber, eggplant, and zucchini. To date, 1,900,000 grafted plants have been
produced using this technique.

A careful procedure to create healthier, more robust plants with increased productivity.

Grafting is an agronomic practice increasingly used and appreciated for the significant quality and health benefits it brings. It is an asexual plant propagation technique with very ancient origins, as it was already used in the Far East thousands of years ago. Spontaneous grafts occur naturally in nature.
A grafted plant retains all its distinctive characteristics but will exhibit increased resistance to low temperatures, fungal/parasite infections, and soil diseases. The productivity benefits are also notable: the plant will be much easier to cultivate, produce longer over time, and yield more abundant and uniform fruits.

The Vivai Bacchetto department produces Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae using the grafting method.

Phases of Grafting

Incisione/Grafting

First, two plants are selected: one that is more robust but less productive, known as the rootstock, and a higher quality plant (scion). Small incisions are made on both stems, and the seedlings are aligned at the cut points, secured with a silicone tie. To support the grafts, inert substrates such as peat, Grodan, or coconut fiber are used, allowing the plant to absorb nutrients directly from the water.

Greenhouse Incubation

At this stage, a single plant body must form: the wound heals, the strong sap of the rootstock starts to flow, and the new plant gains strength, sprouting its first leaves. To ensure this delicate phase occurs effectively, the grafted seedlings are placed in exclusive, isolated small greenhouses with constant temperature, LED lighting, and ideal humidity conditions.

Repotting

Once the grafting is successful, the plant can be gradually reintroduced to normal light and humidity conditions, and finally repotted. During this phase, the roots growing from the scion and the shoots from the rootstock are pruned to ensure the main stems receive the maximum energy.

Top-Quality Technologies

Vivai Bacchetto dedicates an entire production department of 10,000 square meters to the cultivation of grafted seedlings. This department is staffed by highly specialized professionals working in fully aseptic environments, adhering strictly to hygienic and sanitary guidelines. State-of-the-art equipment and technologies are used, particularly for the strict and constant monitoring of parameters such as light,
temperature, and humidity.
