Description of Watermelon
Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is an annual plant from the Cucurbitaceae family.
It has a creeping herbaceous stem, large and hairy leaves with three lobes, and both male and female flowers. The fruit, which is large, round or oval-shaped, weighs between 10 and 20 kg. Its pulp is particularly appreciated for its beneficial properties: with its content of vitamin A and C, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, it strengthens the immune system, detoxifies the body, aids circulation, and contributes to bone strength.
Watermelon is produced both as standard and grafted. Vivai Bacchetto always uses the transplant technique to enhance uniformity and vigor, with particular care and attention to the germinative phase: thermal and water needs vary greatly depending on the season and varieties. Two germination chambers with different temperatures are used—one lower temperature for diploid watermelons and one close to 30°C for
triploid watermelons.
Even the cultivation times, as for all Cucurbitaceae, change considerably: they go from over 50 days for a grafted one, to 19 days for a free-root one in direct sowing.
